Edition #1
London, 1997
“DKANDLE weaves swirling multi-colored vibrant unearthly soundscapes, blending fuzzy and reverberating Shoegaze textures, mesmerizing Dream Pop meditations, sludgy Grungey tones and moody Post-punk strains, heightened with soul-stirring lyricism and pensive emotive vocalizations”
DJ Carl Cox was the first winner of DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs award by public vote
Carl Cox started playing when he was just eight years old, at parties that used to happen at his parents' house. He became a professional DJ in 1991 when the rave scene was at its peak in England.
The name Carl became associated with being a hardcore DJ, but he never agreed to be labeled in this style. "I was being labeled as a hardcore DJ, but I didn't just play hardcore. I was a rave DJ, there were many people in that scene, you would release a record and put out a hit."
He also says, "I wanted to release music, but I couldn't find anyone to help me, so I did it myself." Thus, he set up the now-defunct MMR label, taking his production even further.
These days he has his own agency, managing important names in the techno scene, such as Laurent Garnier, CJ Bolland, Colin Dale, etc.
In 1997, Carl Cox also had a weekly program on Kiss FM in London, and played every Thursday at Ultimate B.A.S.E., of which I had a membership card and was a regular.
