Edition #17
Rio de Janeiro, 2011
It is a great honor to include this interview with the Cyberpunkers here in Tranzine! For those who don't know them yet, they are a duo from Milan with a very energetic and dense sound. I had the amazing opportunity to see them live in Lisbon in February 2011, and I witnessed just how explosive their live set is! I left the show feeling completely refreshed... It was quite a night! I didn’t even know their music beforehand, but I was blown away by the quality of their work. Their music is contagious; it’s impossible to stand still. I also liked the fact that they perform wearing masks, which, although not an original idea (Daft Punk has been doing it for years), still worked well because it keeps the focus on the music and totally avoids the "superstar DJ" vibe. Anyway, it's no exaggeration to say it was one of the best parties I've ever been to. I was so impressed that I decided to invite them for an interview here. They responded right away, saying it would be a pleasure to do the interview, but we’d have to wait a few weeks because they were in the middle of a North American tour promoting their new album, *Fuck the System*. After a long wait, they were finally able to answer the questions. And here is the interview! They are not very well-known in Brazil yet. I hope this interview helps spread the word about them here, and even better, I hope to see them live here as soon as possible.
“DKANDLE weaves swirling multi-colored vibrant unearthly soundscapes, blending fuzzy and reverberating Shoegaze textures, mesmerizing Dream Pop meditations, sludgy Grungey tones and moody Post-punk strains, heightened with soul-stirring lyricism and pensive emotive vocalizations”
TRANZINE - How did you meet?
We met in 2006; up until then, each of us had our own separate music career. We met at a historic club in Milan called De Sade, where we were both playing on the same night. However, we both felt the need to create a new project that could bring our ideas and passions to life. At first, just like it happens with many others, we faced some difficulties, especially in learning how to perform as a duo, which was important to bring “our new philosophy” to the public. But thanks to the perseverance that has always driven us, our partnership has proven to be a winning combination, and now we are reaping the well-deserved rewards.
TRANZINE - What does it mean to be a Cyberpunker?
The name Cyberpunkers was inspired by the "cyberpunk" culture. We have always been fascinated and interested in this style, and we also like wearing masks because they represent a fusion between the human and the machine. We feel like humanoids... made of artificial organs but still human. We are CYBERS, and we feel that way in our music, during our live performances, and even after we finish, because it’s our way of life. We are interested in various aspects of Cyberpunk culture. We support the futuristic viewpoint of the organic/mechanical fusion. Think of the stories in "Mirrorshades," where a man is contaminated by an alien virus, and thanks to the fusion of the virus with his DNA, his body is enhanced by extra-mechanical parts that strengthen his abilities, basically giving him superpowers. We also like to recreate and interpret both in our music and in our shows the typical Cyberpunk atmosphere you might feel walking down a lonely, damp street on the outskirts of a dirty city... It’s a futuristic, decadent, and gritty vision, like in *Blade Runner*, *Tokyo Decadence*, *Tetsuo the Iron Man*, and *The Matrix*, for example.
TRANZINE - Do you also listen to punk rock?
Absolutely! Our musical influences include bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Korn, Nirvana, The Offspring, and even an Italian group: The Punkreas.
TRANZINE - What do you think of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain?
We appreciate Nirvana's music, but how can we express an opinion about an artist who died so tragically? He will always remain in our hearts!
TRANZINE - Who is the short-haired girl that appears in the
"Fuck the System" video? (I love her look!)
She is a girl who hasn’t been screwed by the system, that's all!
TRANZINE - Are you based in Milan? What’s the nightlife scene like there?
Yes, we were born and live in Milan, but we're always traveling around the world, so we don’t know much about the nightlife here.
TRANZINE - Have you been to Brazil?
We’ve never been there, but we hope to go as soon as possible!
TRANZINE - Which bands are you listening to these days?
A lot of bands and artists, because we always listen to different types of music, but Skrillex is our favorite these days in such a dubstep era.
