“DKANDLE weaves swirling multi-colored vibrant unearthly soundscapes, blending fuzzy and reverberating Shoegaze textures, mesmerizing Dream Pop meditations, sludgy Grungey tones and moody Post-punk strains, heightened with soul-stirring lyricism and pensive emotive vocalizations”

Here is another label among many applied to electronic music. But just as Intelligent Dance Music, or IDM (also called Intelligent Techno), becomes more and more popular, it also becomes increasingly clear that the style's name isn't exactly perfect. The problem is that it assumes that other types of dance music are not intelligent either...

What are the main characteristics of IDM?

::: Atonal music that uses strange, bizarre, noisy, obscure samples. Flattened beats, chopped-up synthesizer lines. Electronica in its purest essence.

::: Music that challenges rhythmic conventions. Many good IDMs include dark jungle lines and traces of ambient with lots of twists, sudden starts and stops, experimentalism. It's like electronic free jazz.

::: Artists who generally have no interest in appearing in photos, don't care about pre-fabricated releases and articles, use photocopied art for album covers, are indifferent to formalities of label/media relations, have simple homepages, use the latest technology, invent their own synthesizers.

::: Brainy and hardly danceable music. Aphex Twin is considered the father of the style. Other guys navigating the style include the Brazilian Amon Tobin, the Russian Fizzarum, and the American Twine.

(EDIT 2024: Currently, this name is outdated, although it's still used. Aphex Twin criticized the name because it assumes that only this genre is intelligent... They then started defining the style as "Braindance").

What do you think
of the genre's name?
