Grant T. Garden works for raves in England, using the Sun as a non-polluting (and free) energy source that powers the music at the events he participates in. This approach aligns perfectly with psychedelic culture, although it is still rarely used in parties. Music generated by the Sun is special because it does not pollute or harm the environment in its creation; it causes no environmental impact and is powered directly by the source of all life, the Sun.

Interview by Jennie Postman

- Why are you here at the VOOV Festival?
Because I want to bring the idea of solar energy to psy-trance culture. The culture at these events isn't "green" yet, and it needs to be. I don't see any evidence of a green culture here.

- Is there a green trance culture in England?
I think there are more people in England involved with the trance culture who are connecting with Nature. They're becoming vegetarians, seeing themselves as "green," or at least greener. This is related to a higher state of consciousness about Gaia and about ourselves, of course. It's a strange contradiction that the psy-trance movement isn't green yet. There's no doubt that there is a connection between psychedelia and green culture because being psychedelic usually leads to identifying with green ideology.

- Have you ever had problems with generators?
Well, we don't use generators. The rule is: no generators.

- But what if it rains the whole time?
We have plenty of batteries, so if it's dark or raining, we still have a lot of extra energy stored in our pre-charged batteries.

- Can anyone use a solar-powered sound system?
Of course! Anyone can. Many people get it the moment they see the whole thing happening. They’ve never seen anything like it before, but they understand it right away. It's so simple: solar panels, car batteries, amplifiers; that's all you need!

- Do you really think there will be a change in mindset?
This change has to come anyway. People need to start making this change. And there's no risk! It's green, beautiful, and doesn't pollute!

- What's the current political situation regarding raves in England?
Putting on good festivals in the UK nowadays is getting harder and harder. We have to pay big money to local politicians and the police. There are lots of regulations and controls. It's so expensive to do it legally that only big commercial promoters can do it now. Everything is law and regulation: health and safety. You have to do it a certain way, and if you don't, you can't go ahead. So people don't have free parties anymore. The police don't allow it. Commercial events still happen, but there is very little going on underground. That's why many British travelers are going to other European countries, like Germany and the Netherlands, where it's much more open and liberal, with more potential for growth. I think we've reached a "critical mass" in England now, and there's nowhere else to go.
